The oldest bookstore, Bertrand, was founded in 1732 by the Frenchman Pedro Faure, who merged with Pedro Bertrand's business.
It was originally located in the Chiado district of Lisbon until 1755, when the store was destroyed by an earthquake.
It was decided to move the bookstore to the area of the church NS das Nesessidades, but after 18 years it returned to its original location. It still operates there today.
Over the course of its nearly three hundred years of existence, the store has had to deal with more than just earthquakes.
He also saw civil war, the reign of nine kings, the assassination of a king, 16 presidents of the republic.
In addition, he faced six coups d'état, three republics, two world wars and the unification of Europe.
Over the years, the Bertrand bookstore chain has expanded significantly and today it is one of the largest book retailers in Portugal, with more than 50 stores.
The chain's stores focus on popularizing literature and books.
Literary readings, talks, writing workshops and courses on Portuguese literature are held regularly.
