When we talk about microplastics, we mean tiny polymer fragments ranging in size from less than 5 millimeters to 1 micrometer.
According to a study in the journal Environmental Research, this “additive” was found in 90% of plant and animal protein samples.
Apples and carrots were named among the most polluted plants. Lettuce was the least polluted.
Another unexpected product on this list is rice. Before you prepare another dish from this cereal, do not forget to rinse it: thanks to this treatment, you can remove up to 40% of unwanted particles.
The researchers also analyzed beef, shrimp, chicken breast, nuggets, pork, seafood, tofu and some products made from plant protein.
The top foods for microplastic content were breaded shrimp and nuggets made from plant-based meat.
In the honorable last place in this case were chicken breast, pork chops and tofu.
Of course, under these circumstances, we would like to know how we can reduce the content of microplastics in food products.
To this end, experts advise against storing food in plastic containers and not heating up food in the microwave. Whenever possible, try to choose fresh foods rather than processed and ultra-processed foods stored in plastic packaging.
