In the 18th and 19th centuries, the hussar Ladislav Shkulteti-Gabrisch served in the Austrian army.
The length of service was… 81 years.
Thanks to this achievement, Shkulteti-Gabriš received the status of the person who served in the army the longest.
The future hussar was born in the summer of 1738 in the town of Mojtin (now part of Slovakia).
At the age of 12, Shkulteti-Gabrish became an orphan and ended up in one of the hussar regiments of the Austrian army.
Throughout his life, the hussar took part in more than 250 battles. Shkulteti-Gabrish received several wounds, but none of them were serious.
Such luck, combined with longevity, allowed the hussar to set a record (“Longest service in the army”) and receive an unusual “title” from his contemporaries and fellow countrymen – “Eternal Soldier”.
It is worth emphasizing that Shkulteti-Gabrish rose to the rank of "sergeant major".
The record-breaking hussar was also known as a very brave man.
Shkulteti-Gabrish, who served in the regiment until the end of his life, died in 1831 at the age of 93.
