Why the Indian festival of Diwali entered the Guinness Book of Records: the reason is oil lamps
The main Indian festival of Diwali, which took place on November 12, 2023, was awarded a mention in the pages of the Guinness Book of Records.
On the evening of that November Sunday, the festival participants gathered on the banks of what they consider to be the sacred Saryu River in Ayodhya.
Here they lit more than 2.2 million oil lamps.
In addition, lamps were placed in more than 50 locations in the city – where Hindus believe the deity Rama was born.
This allowed us to set a new record.
Compared to 2022, the number of lit lamps has increased by 700 thousand.
Small oil lamps, or diyas as they are also called, are used to decorate homes and streets during Diwali, the Indian New Year.
It is believed that the light emitted by these lamps is supposed to attract the attention of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune, and drive away evil spirits for the entire year.
