Seychelles giant tortoise Jonathan celebrated his 191st birthday in December 2023.

This makes her not only the oldest turtle in the world, but also the oldest living land creature on the planet.

In fact, Jonathan's age may be even older - no one knows his exact date of birth.

In 1882, several tortoises, including Jonathan, were brought from the Seychelles to St. Helena.

There they were settled on the territory of the local governor’s residence, where the animal remains to this day.

At that point, Jonathan had already reached sexual maturity, which occurs in turtles of his species when they are at least 50 years old.

Through simple mathematical calculations, it was discovered that the baby turtle was born around 1832.

In any case, Jonathan is a long-liver – the average lifespan of Seychelles turtles is 150 years.
