The hardest records to break are those for holding your breath. You can train as much as you want, but without knowing the secrets, it will be difficult to get close to a world record.

We will tell you which people have stayed underwater without scuba gear the longest and who were given this opportunity by nature itself.

World record

First, let us recall that the world record for holding one's breath underwater belongs to Croatian Budimir Šobat.

In March 2021, he stayed underwater without equipment for 24 minutes and 37 seconds.

But, as it turned out, before going under water, the man inhaled pure oxygen.

Record holders by nature

The Bajau people live in Southeast Asia. They are nomadic people who get their food underwater.

By modern standards, these are the true representatives of freediving.

They dive to depths of up to 60 meters without snorkels, wetsuits or other diving gear and equipment.

The secret is that over the 1000-year history of the tribe's existence and due to living on the water, the Bajau have developed specific characteristics.

They had a DNA mutation that resulted in an enlarged spleen (approximately 50% or more).

As you know, the spleen is a blood bank, and it filters damaged red blood cells.

And due to the fact that it is increased, the supply of oxygen-saturated red blood cells also increases.
