Which is better: a leash or a retractable leash?

In 2007, there were more than 16,000 hospital visits in the United States where retractable leashes "caused" significant injuries to dogs.

This makes you wonder if it's even worth using retractable dog walkers.

Let's figure it out together with dog trainer Diana Belyaeva .

On the street you can see many owners with "roulettes" in their hands. A person walks, in his hand a "dangerous" accessory, a stretched rope, then a dog follows. Experience shows that roulettes only contribute to the pet's incorrect behavior. It destroys the trust between the owner and the dog. The disadvantages of a roulette are as follows:

  • If an emergency occurs and the animal needs to be pulled towards you, this action cannot be done quickly.
  • On "tight" roulettes dogs do not feel relaxed, they cannot show peaceful signals to their relatives, so fights become more frequent
  • If you drop the tape measure, the dog will get scared and run away, the rattling tape measure will only scare the pet even more.
  • Retractable ropes with thin cables often cause injuries, burns and cuts

The leash only makes the dog's behavior worse. The leash simply gives more options on a walk.

Contact with the owner improves. The dog senses it, remembers the owner's movements and signals. The pet begins to move in a larger radius, personal space appears, but control remains.

The animal begins to show signals of reconciliation to other relatives better, interaction with them improves, including demonstration of peaceful intentions. Your pet can calmly explore the earth, new smells, objects, without fear for its safety.

Choose a leash from 3 meters (minimum), the longer the better. Rubberized so it doesn't slip.

Pay attention to the snap hook. It should be lightweight. Refastening to a short leash. With this function, the leash becomes even more convenient.

If you think that a leash is convenient, it is not true. It is an illusion. A regular leash helps better establish contact with your pet, teach it the necessary behavior, and most importantly - minimize risks during walks, which cannot be said about leashes.
