Long-living cats: scientists have revealed which breeds live the longest

British scientists set out to find out which cat breeds are distinguished by their longevity.

At the same time, the average lifespan of domestic cats was established, as well as the factors determining the longevity of a pet.

This question was addressed by the staff of the Royal Veterinary College of London. The results of the study were published by Live Science.

In total, scientists studied the lifestyle of about 8,000 domestic cats living in the UK and who died from January 2019 to March 2021.

For convenience, the data was compiled into tables, with the main focus being on age and health status.

Research results

Thus, it was possible to find out that the average lifespan of a domestic cat in Foggy Albion is 11.7 years.

Moreover, mixed-breed cats lived one and a half years longer than purebred pets.

Burmese cats were recognized as the longest-living cats, living on average 14.4 years.

The lifespan of sphinxes was the shortest – 6.7 years, which is associated with a predisposition to a number of diseases, including heart disease.

It also turned out that female cats live, on average, 1.3 years longer than male cats.

And sterilization and castration increased the life of pets by 1.1 years.
