Cats are amazing animals that can be affectionate, playful, and unpredictable.
Sometimes they can suddenly start running around the house like crazy, causing surprise or irritation to their owners. Why does a cat run around the apartment and what does it mean?
There are several possible reasons for this behavior of the cat, which depend on its age, character, health and living conditions. Here are some of them:
1. Excess energy
Cats sleep most of the day (12 to 16 hours a day), so they can be very active while they are awake.
Running around the apartment is a way for them to stretch, exercise, and have fun. Young cats and kittens who have not yet lost their playful spirit do this especially often.
2. The thirst for hunting
Cats are predatory animals that have a hunting instinct. Even if they are well-fed and happy thanks to their owners, they can sometimes chase imaginary prey or any moving objects in the house (toys, dust particles, insects, etc.). This is how they satisfy their need for hunting and self-affirmation.
3. Long-term loneliness
Some breeds of cats are very attached to their owners and do not tolerate prolonged absence of human communication well.
If a cat is often left alone at home, it may start running around the apartment to relieve stress, to feel bored, or to attract attention. A cat may also run around the apartment in anticipation of its owner's return or in joy at his appearance.
4. A thirst for attention and joint games
Cats love to play not only alone, but also with other cats or with people. If a cat feels lonely or bored, it may run around the apartment to show its owner that it wants to play or get affection.
Playtime helps strengthen the bond between cat and human and improves the mood of both.
5. Toilet
Some cats may act as if they are celebrating their success after using the litter box or chase around the house with a wild expression on their face.
This may be because they feel a sense of relief or pride in their efforts. It may also be a way to get rid of excess droppings or feces on their fur or paws.
Sometimes cats run after going to the toilet if they feel pain or discomfort during defecation or urination. This may be a sign of infection or gastrointestinal disease and requires a visit to the veterinarian.
6. Health problems
If a cat runs around the house after using the litter box, this may be due to problems with the digestive system.
Your kitty may experience pain or discomfort when defecating. This could be due to urinary tract infections, kidney problems, constipation, or other medical conditions.
In this case, running around the apartment is a way to relieve tension or get rid of fecal residue on the fur. If you notice that your cat is going to the toilet frequently, has difficulty defecating or urinating, makes strange sounds, or has changes in appetite or weight, be sure to contact your veterinarian.
7. Dirty litter tray
Cats are very sensitive about the cleanliness of their litter box and may refuse to use it if it does not meet their standards.
If the tray is overflowing or has an unpleasant smell, the cat may run around the apartment after going to the toilet to express its dissatisfaction or ask you to clean it. To avoid such situations, it is recommended to clean the tray at least once a day and change the filler regularly.
