It happens that a dog's breathing becomes heavy for no apparent reason. In fact, it only seems that way.
The complication can be caused by poor nutrition, which has led to obesity, or by allergies, heart and lung diseases, or a stressful situation.
The head of the Russian Cynological Federation, Vladimir Golubev, spoke about this in an interview with the publication “ Veterinary Science and Life ”.
Breathing is normal
First of all, the specialist noted that a dog’s breathing, or more precisely the number of inhalations and exhalations, depends on the animal’s size, age and load, body position, as well as emotional and physical state.
On average, and at rest, small breeds take 15-30 breaths in and out per minute.
Medium-sized breeds - 10-25, and large dogs - 10-20 breaths per minute. Otherwise, we can talk about violations.
1. Obesity
Excess weight makes the heart and lungs work harder, which can cause breathing difficulties. You should consult your veterinarian who will prescribe a diet.
2. Allergy
The development of an allergy may be indicated by a rash, itching, and the dog may start sneezing.
3. Diseases
First of all, these are diseases of the heart and lungs. Along with this, breathing can become frequent and difficult, and a cough also appears.
4. Stress
A dog may be frightened or alerted by noise, and an unfamiliar environment or situation may also cause stress.
5. Pain syndrome
Rapid breathing can be caused by injuries, surgery, etc. and requires specialist intervention.
6. Heat stroke
This occurs in hot weather, as well as during high physical exertion, or if the dog is indoors.
