From Flight 19, which simply disappeared in December 1945, to Flight MH370, whose fate is constantly the subject of new theories.
The article tells about four mysterious plane crashes from the past and explains what is true and what is fiction.
Facts
The first of the mysterious air crashes involved Flight 19.
It included five American torpedo bombers with 13 crew members, which took off from Fort Lauderdale on December 5, 1945, on a training flight.
Ninety minutes after takeoff, one of the pilots, Charles S. Taylor, reported problems with his orientation in a radio message: the compass had failed, the national boundaries below them could no longer be discerned, and he was lost.
Then Taylor was ordered to fly west. But Taylor replied, "I can't tell you which way is west. I don't understand anything else."
Then the weather worsened and the fuel ran out. Taylor reportedly said in one of his last radio messages: "We'll have to leave if we don't make landfall."
Finally, after Flight 19's final report, the floatplane took off to search. But when it reached the supposed position of the five torpedo bombers, it too had vanished without a trace.
Here is an excerpt from the US Navy investigation report. To date, no victims or wreckage of the six military aircraft have been found.
Assumptions
Many conspiracy theorists view this case as one of the key pieces of evidence supporting the Bermuda Triangle theory.
For example, Allan W. Eckert, who was the first to devote an entire article to Flight 19 in a magazine for military veterans, as reported by Spiegel Online.
The theory behind the Bermuda Triangle is that ships and planes continue to disappear inexplicably in the western Atlantic Ocean north of the Caribbean Sea.
However, experts suggest a more realistic event: they believe that the pilots must have run out of fuel at some point, crashed into the sea and sank there. It was believed that the seaplane exploded in mid-air.
Facts
The story of the infamous Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 began on March 8, 2014. At that time, the plane was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
In addition to the experienced pilot, who had logged more than 18,000 flight hours, and the rest of the crew, there were 239 passengers on board.
The plane suddenly disappeared from radar about 40 minutes after takeoff. However, satellite data has since shown that the plane did not crash at that time.
Instead, it flew for about seven more hours, first west, then far south. MH370 likely crashed in the Indian Ocean.
However, its remains were never found after the crash.
Assumptions
There are currently dozens of theories and speculations about what might have happened that day.
The most recent example is the new book, Disappeared, by French journalist Florence de Changy, who lives in Southeast Asia.
In it, she raises the possibility that the plane was shot down, presumably, according to de Changy, by the American military, who were after the spy device on board.
Canadian air crash researcher Larry Vance believes a completely different cause is likely.
He claimed in his book, MH370: The Mystery Revealed, that the Malaysian pilot had deliberately ditched the plane to commit suicide. He based his assumption on the condition of the two dozen pieces of debris that were found.
Chief investigator Peter Foley, on the other hand, is convinced the plane crashed into the sea due to a lack of fuel, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported.
Other sources believe that the plane was shot down by the military, as was flight MH17 in 2014 over Ukraine.
There is no shortage of abstruse explanations. This is probably one of the mysterious air crashes that has one of the most conspiracy theories.
Sometimes they say that the plane was hijacked to Kazakhstan by Russians, sometimes aliens are to blame for the disappearance of the plane.
Facts
Egypt Air Flight 990 (MSR990 for short) was scheduled to depart from New York City to Cairo on October 31, 1999. But the scheduled flight crashed into the Atlantic Ocean about 60 miles off the island of Nantucket.
Before the crash, the flight recorder allegedly recorded the co-pilot repeating over and over, "I trust in God." When the pilot returned to the cockpit, he allegedly said, "What is this? What is this? Did you turn off the drive?"
All 217 people on board the plane died in the crash, according to the final report from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
Assumptions
The cause of the crash is not exactly clear, the US and Egypt are still arguing about the true cause. The Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority attributed the crash to a malfunction in the altitude measurement system, as reported by ARD.
However, US authorities believe it was suicide: the second pilot had a history of sexual harassment and was allegedly warned the morning before the crash on March 21, 2002.
The NTSB released the aforementioned final investigation report, which concluded that the accident was likely the result of misconduct by the backup first officer.
However, in Egypt, this thesis and the work of the NTSB were criticized. The fact is that the case has not been clearly clarified to this day.
Facts
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Flight 404 went missing more than 27 years ago. The plane took off from Giglit, Pakistan, at 7:36 a.m. on August 25, 1989.
There were 54 people on board the Fokker F27 Friendship aircraft, destination Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.
The crew's last radio message came just 4 minutes after takeoff - landing in Islamabad is expected at 08:32.
But the car never arrived, and the crash site has still not been found. These are all the facts in detail.
Assumptions
It was never determined why the flight never arrived at its destination.
One theory is that the plane may have crashed over the Himalayas, another is that it was shot down by Indian authorities for accidentally flying over the border.
However, there is no evidence to support any of these theories. This is also one of the reasons why relatives still, decades later, wonder whether the authorities had a hand in the case.
