Since the 1950s, multi-story construction has become the norm in the Soviet Union.

However, only five- and nine-story buildings were built en masse. We explain why.

Why were 5- and 9-story buildings built en masse in the USSR?

The answer to this question is very simple: in order to build as much affordable housing as possible, it was necessary to economize.

Nevertheless, building codes were observed. And they were such that without garbage chutes and elevators it was allowed to build houses no higher than 5 floors.

There was a similar situation with 9-story buildings. Firstly, according to Soviet standards, buildings higher than 9 floors had to have two elevators.

Secondly, in higher-rise buildings it was necessary to make isolated stairwells with a separate ventilation system, air pressurization and smoke removal systems, special evacuation routes. All this greatly increased the cost of construction.
