Why Tomatoes Crack: 3 Common Mistakes Gardeners Make

03.12.2024 06:20

Cracking of tomatoes is a common problem in growing tomatoes.

In most cases, the gardeners themselves are the ones to blame for the deterioration in the appearance and condition of the fruits.

An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh listed the common mistakes of summer residents that lead to cracking of tomatoes.

Incorrect watering

The soil under tomato bushes needs regular watering and uniform moistening.

If the owner of a country plot allows the moisture level to fluctuate sharply (first the soil is dry, and then very wet), then cracks will begin to appear on the previously dried skin of tomatoes.

In hot weather, water tomatoes twice a week; in cloudy periods, once every 5 days.

Do not skip watering and do not allow the soil to dry out.

If a mistake was made, then replenish the moisture level gradually so that the plant has time to “get used” to the new conditions.

However, gradual watering is welcome in any case.

Unwillingness to protect the plant from heat

Tomatoes can also crack due to high temperatures, which make the skin of tomatoes less elastic: the risk of cracks seriously increases.

When growing vegetables in a greenhouse, do not forget about the importance of regular ventilation.

Is it hot in the greenhouse, despite the open door? Then it makes sense to apply lime milk to the roof and walls of the greenhouse: this way you will achieve one important effect. We are talking about shading.

Unwillingness to protect the plant from diseases

Tomatoes can start to crack due to diseases. Examples: late blight, blossom-end rot.

Do not forget about the importance of prevention and timely use of fungicides.

For reference

Tomato is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant, a species of the genus Solanum of the Solanaceae family.
