What to do with your compost pile in late autumn: 4 essential steps

The final month of autumn has arrived.

During this period, summer residents are busy preparing plants for winter.

Unfortunately, not all gardeners and vegetable growers are aware that in late autumn it is necessary to “help” not only the flora, but also the compost heap.

The goal of the owner of a country plot is the following: to ensure that the composting process does not stop even during the cold season.

To do this, you need to perform several important steps.

Insulation of a compost heap

The mass must be protected from the upcoming frosts.

To do this, you need to put straw or sawdust on it.

The thickness of the additional layer should be approximately 15 centimeters.

Adding new materials

Before winter comes, new organic matter needs to be added to the compost bin.

Good options: kitchen waste, manure, leaf blades.

If the gardener does not do this, the mass will not maintain the appropriate temperature.

Turning the mass over

This simple action will ensure that an additional “portion” of oxygen enters the compost.

Rearranging the box

The container should be placed where it is exposed to direct sunlight.

Leaving your compost bin in the shade over the winter is a bad idea.
