Even though the cold weather is approaching, there are still a few chores around the dacha that can be completed in October.
Collect fallen leaves to prevent pests and diseases from spreading next season. They can be used for compost or as mulch.
If there are late vegetables and fruits left in the garden and vegetable patch, they also need to be removed so that they do not rot and become breeding grounds for infection. This is especially true for root crops.
October is an ideal month to do construction or repair work at your dacha. Dry and mild autumn weather creates comfortable conditions for working outside.
You can renovate your summer house, install new windows or doors, paint the walls, and build new gazebos or recreation areas.
Pay attention to the condition of greenhouses, fences and other structures: it is important to repair or strengthen them before the onset of winter winds and snowfalls.
Be sure to check that your garden tools are in good condition. You will most likely need to clean and disinfect your shovels and hoes if you haven’t already done so.
Attention should be paid to flower pots: empty them of their contents, wash them (by the way, limescale deposits on the walls can be easily removed with a regular soap solution) and dry them, then put them away for storage in a suitable place.
If you are using an electric lawn mower, make sure the cord and plug are in good condition. Gasoline models require oil and air filter changes. Make sure the fuel level is at a minimum.
