They say that when sowing green manure, it is important to consider crop rotation and the condition of the soil. But if you listen to everyone, you can drown in a sea of advice without making the right decision.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist agronomist and landscape designer, told how to choose green manure for sowing in the fall.

Cereals

They saturate the soil well with nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and protein, loosen the soil well, repel nematodes and suppress weeds.

It is recommended to sow barley, oats, rye and wheat where you plan to grow nightshades, pumpkins and squash in the future.

Legumes

These are lupine and clover, alfalfa and vetch, peas and lentils, sweet clover.

They saturate the soil with nitrogen and phosphorus, loosen it, improve moisture and air permeability, and resist the growth of weeds.

After them, root crops, nightshades, cabbage, zucchini, pumpkin and greens grow well.

Cruciferous

Mustard, rape, oilseed radish, soybeans and rapeseed are sown to saturate the soil with potassium and phosphorus. The plants will drive away nematodes and wireworms.

After them, nightshades, root crops, cucumbers and zucchini, greens are planted, but it is not recommended to plant cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables after them.

Buckwheat

It grows quickly. After it, the soil is saturated with potassium and phosphorus, becomes loose and acidity is normalized.

Buckwheat has no special requirements in terms of crop rotation.

Phacelia

Phacelia is a universal green manure. Any vegetables can be planted after it. It has developed roots and lush greenery.

It saturates the soil with all the necessary nutrients, improves its structure, repels many pests and does not allow weeds to grow.

And in some cases, several types of green manure from different groups are sown at once.
