Have you harvested winter garlic? Don't forget to plant this on the vacated bed - you won't regret it

The final third of August has arrived. The winter garlic harvest should have been collected long ago.

In addition, by this period many beds are already cleared of early cabbage, early and mid-season varieties of cucumbers.

Leaving these spaces "unfilled" is not a good idea.

At the end of summer, it is worth planting green manure here, which many call “green fertilizers.”

This approach guarantees the restoration of the soil and the return of its fertility. And all thanks to the replenishment of the deficiency of important compounds and microelements.

In addition, thanks to green manure, the soil acquires protection from drying out.

An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what green fertilizers should be planted in a former garlic bed.

What to plant in place of garlic

In the final days of the calendar summer or already in autumn, it is worth sowing one of the following plants:

  • mustard;
  • buckwheat;
  • rape;
  • lupine;
  • clover.

These green manures are also suitable for beds where other crops were grown.

Important: the selected green manure should not be a representative of the same family as the plant to which the bed previously "belonged". So, you should not sow mustard and rapeseed in place of cabbage. And after peas, you cannot sow clover and lupine.
