It's time to harvest onions: how not to make a mistake with the timing - three precise signs were named for gardeners

The harvest must be collected in a timely manner, especially if we are talking about root crops - the longer they are in the ground after ripening, the less likely it is that the vegetables will last all winter. For example, onions.

But harvesting ahead of schedule will not benefit the harvest.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti" - a scientist agronomist and landscape designer, told how to determine that onions are ripe for harvesting.

Deadlines

Depending on the climate and weather, onions begin to be harvested in the second half of July or in August.

But in this matter it is better to focus on more pronounced signs, that is, on the appearance of the plant.

External signs

1. Onions can be harvested if their feathers start to turn yellow. There is no need to wait until the entire above-ground part dries out.

It is enough for only 2-3 feathers to turn yellow.

2. Pay attention to the neck of the bulb. The place where the feathers pass into the so-called turnip should be thin and dry.

By this time the feathers may dry out and fall to the ground.

3. The part of the onion bulb protruding above the ground should also dry out and begin to peel.

Onions are harvested in dry weather, and watering is stopped a week before.
