A summer resident who grows tomatoes and is planning to start harvesting soon may see only partially reddened tomatoes on the bushes.
It often happens that the upper part of the fruit remains “unpainted”.
In other words, the vegetable is only partially red: its top (or “shoulders”) is yellow.
This is a bad sign: the fruits ripen unevenly. Their taste is unlikely to please the gardener.
What explains such a nuisance? An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh listed the possible reasons for the appearance of "yellow shoulders" on tomatoes.
It is possible that the gardener simply went overboard with removing the leaf blades.
A lack of leaves can cause the top of the fruit to become very hot, causing problems with ripening.
If there is too much nitrogen in the soil, the quality of the fruits on the tomato bushes will decrease.
Don't overdo it with nitrogen fertilizers, otherwise the tomato flesh will turn out white.
“Yellow shoulders” can appear due to either excess moisture or insufficient watering.
