Returning spring frosts can spoil a summer resident’s plans for the harvest.

Moreover, both fruit trees and main vegetable crops suffer from frost equally. Even planted potatoes can suffer from frost if they manage to sprout by that time.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to save the potato harvest.

Potatoes are frozen - signs

Young shoots may die if the air temperature drops below zero. Strong and developed plants tolerate frosts steadfastly.

If the young shoots have turned black and are withering, then there is every reason to believe that the tuber will rot too. If no measures are taken.

What to do if potato seedlings are frozen

1. Frozen seedlings can be saved by adding nitrophoska (5 g per 1 square meter) or foliar feeding with urea (20 g per 10 l of water).

2. Treat the seedlings with the preparation "Epin Extra". It is used as a growth stimulant and protects plants well from bad weather.

3. It is also suggested to stretch a black film over the bed, securing it to arches or pegs, but this must be done before sunrise.

4. Another option is to hill up the seedlings, cover them with a thick layer of straw, or water them generously (the latter option works the same as with sprinkling).

But it is best to monitor the weather, plant vegetables on time and choose varieties suitable for your climate.
