It has long been a known fact that the amount of juicy root crops harvested is directly related to the quality of soil preparation in the seed beds.

The most favorable soils for planting carrots are sandy loams or loams.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to solve this issue.

The optimum soil acidity should be 7 pH. It is better to choose a flat area for carrot planting, without slopes.

It is important to consider crop rotation on the soil. It is best to grow root crops after harvesting:

- potatoes;
- cabbage;
- tomatoes.

You should not allocate beds for planting root crops where you have harvested parsley, parsnips, dill, or celery.

The planting area must be well lit, then the carrot yield will increase threefold.

To ensure that the soil is loose, fertilizers are added. Preparation of the area for sowing, which should be especially noted, begins in the fall.

After digging, add peat (3 kg per 1 planting square meter) and sawdust.

In the spring, superphosphates that are nutritious for black soil are added; if the soil is podzolic, a sand-peat mixture, nitrophoska or compost are added.

Important! Nitrogen fertilizers should be applied in minimal quantities so as not to reduce the quality characteristics of root crops: shape, taste, weight.

It is recommended to break up the beds to a height of 35 cm, the soil should be slightly moistened before direct sowing, and the seeds of root crops should be pre-soaked to increase germination.

Thanks to simple rules for preparing areas for planting, you can significantly increase the carrot harvest in your own garden beds.
