Everyone knows the taste of blackcurrant. It is not only tasty, but also healthy. And in order to get a good harvest, you need to take care of it. Therefore, one of the most necessary factors is spring processing of the bush.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to care for currants in the spring.

Blackcurrant Prevention

Before the snow melts, it is necessary to think about preventive measures when caring for blackcurrant bushes. Because as soon as it melts and the first sun appears, which everyone is waiting for, it will turn out that everyone is waiting for it, including pests and pathogens.

They mostly hide in the leaves, in the folds of the bark, on the branches, that is, they hide and wait for their moment.

The process of processing black currants can be divided into four periods:

- the beginning of the arrival of spring;
- flowering time;
- end of flowering;
- completion of berry picking.

Caring for black currants with the arrival of spring

A significant harvest develops on the shoots of the previous year. Young shoots are easy to distinguish from old shoots, namely by the color of the bark.

The young shoot has a transparent green color, while the old one has a dark brownish color with a gray coating; they will not actually produce a productive harvest.

Why is it necessary to prune currants? So that they bring a rich harvest with large berries.

The first thing to do is to cut off all the lower branches that are close to the ground to prevent them from rotting. Because during the ripening of the berries, these branches bend even more towards the ground and begin to mold and rot.

Then you need to get rid of old and diseased shoots that are affected by fungi. You need to thin out the middle of the bush and get rid of the wrong shoots. The more you cut, the better it will be for the bush.

Even in spring, you can carry out an event such as scalding with boiling water.

The bush is scalded with water, the temperature of which must be 80 degrees. This procedure can be carried out using a watering can.

The currant bush can also be treated with ash. In addition, you need to carefully inspect the entire bush and identify bud mites. If mites are found, they should be cut off and burned.

The best time to carry out these works is in March in the second half of the month.

There are two main pieces of advice

1. Try to buy new and good varieties. As a rule, new varieties are more resistant to diseases and pests.

2. If blackcurrants are pruned correctly, pesticides and other substances for processing them will no longer be needed to obtain a good harvest.
