Slugs are one of the types of garden pests that give summer residents no peace.

On a sunny day, it is not so easy to detect parasites on a plantation, except in damp and shady strawberry thickets or in a greenhouse. But not everyone knows that the pest, or rather its offspring, can survive the winter in any frost.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told when to start fighting slugs.

Contrary to popular belief, the fight against gastropods should begin in winter or early spring.

When the first greenery appears, slugs will follow from underground.

If February is warm and rainy, then you need to fight pests without waiting for the onset of calendar spring.

Pests are attracted to damp environments, an abundance of fallen leaves and rotting vegetation; there are often cases of pests living in compost, garbage heaps and mulch.

At the same time, pests do not have many natural enemies at this time of year.

If silver stripes are found on the soil and any other surfaces, then the slugs have already woken up and are prowling around your area.

How to get rid of

After the snow melts, you need to clean up the area and burn all the garbage and other possible habitats of the pest.

Among birds, rooks, starlings, and jackdaws readily destroy gastropods. And among terrestrial inhabitants, toads and hedgehogs.

Therefore, you need to create comfortable conditions for the habitation of birds and animals in your garden.
