If you notice that the leaves of the Decembrist have started to change their usual green hue to red, this may happen due to two reasons.
An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh spoke about them in more detail, having previously clarified that in essence we are not talking about leaves, but about the “segments” of Schlumbergera.
If the Decembrist segments turn red in the summer, the plant may have been exposed to direct sunlight.
The Decembrist does not like too much light; in its natural environment it grows in partial shade, for which this plant even received the nickname of a forest cactus.
Another reason for the leaves turning red could be the organization of the dormant period in too cold a place.
In this situation, the Decembrist begins to produce special substances – anthocyanins.
This “behavior” is a protective reaction of the flower’s body and helps it avoid diseases.
