If you are one of those gardeners who has a plot of land with clay soil at their disposal, don’t give up.

As the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh said, with the right approach, even from such land you can collect a decent harvest.

First of all, make sure that the area is not over-watered. Otherwise, you will have to deal with the drainage of excess water, for example, by digging grooves between the beds and scattering the “extra” soil on both sides – as a result, the beds will be raised, and the water will remain in the grooves.

After that, set yourself the goal of making the soil looser. Green manure will help you with this, which should be worked into the ground and only then plant crops.

Experienced gardeners advise using buckwheat, lupine, cruciferous crops or special clay-clay-breaking green manure.

In winter, clay soil needs to be dug up, but it should not be harrowed - all this will help improve its structure.

Another mandatory "procedure" is mulching. Use, for example, straw in a layer of 5-7 cm. To prevent pests from breeding under the mulch, use biological preparations or a solution of ammonia prepared from 40-50 g of alcohol and a bucket of water.

You should be careful with watering and not wet the soil unless there is a need to do so.

In spring, be sure to water the clay soil with hay bacillus (100 ml per 10 l of water) to disinfect it. You can also do some plastering.
