How to Grow Thick, Dark Green Dill in Your Garden or Windowsill: Follow These 3 Rules
You can grow dill in open ground and on a windowsill. To get a fresh harvest all summer long, you need to follow several rules.
The first rule is to choose the variety. There are different varieties of dill, which differ in height, leaf shape and ripening time.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to grow fresh and healthy dill on a windowsill.
To grow thick, dark green dill, it is better to choose varieties with a lush harvest, for example, “Salute” or “Alligator”.
These varieties form bushy rosettes with numerous leaves and do not bloom for a long time.
If you need dill for canning, then the varieties “Grenadier” or “Umbrellas” are suitable, which quickly form umbrellas with seeds.
The second rule is planting. Dill can be planted in early spring or late summer.
To have greenery all summer long, it is recommended to sow dill every 15 days until the end of August. Dill likes sunny or slightly shaded places and loose neutral soil.
Before planting, the soil should be well fertilized with compost or humus.
Dill seeds can be sown in holes or rows to a depth of 1-2 cm and a distance of 10-15 cm between plants. After planting, the soil should be watered and covered with mulch from grass or straw.
The third rule is care. Dill requires regular watering, especially on hot days. For one square meter of the plot, you need to pour 2-3 buckets of water twice a day.
When watering, try not to get on the leaves, so as not to cause burns or diseases. Dill also needs weeding and loosening of the soil.
If you sowed dill in pre-fertilized soil, then you do not need to feed it. If the soil is poor, you can add nitrogen fertilizers, for example, nettle infusion.
By following these simple rules, you can grow thick, dark green dill in your garden or windowsill and enjoy its aroma and taste.
