Potato scab is a common disease that affects the tubers of the crop and can lead to significant yield losses.

In this article, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh examined in detail the causes of scab in potato beds.

Often the gardener himself is to blame for the raging disease, having added a lot of ash or fresh manure to the planting crop in the spring.

Remember: fresh manure can only be used in garden beds in the autumn.

Scab is also a real problem if potatoes grow on neutral and slightly alkaline soils.

At risk are potato varieties with thin skins (usually Dutch varieties).

In this case, the situation can be resolved by replacing the varieties of potatoes grown with thicker-skinned ones.

Finally, we can advise gardeners not to ignore pre-planting treatment of tubers using solutions of such preparations as "Trichodermin" or "Fitosporin". Potatoes should be kept in the named compositions for 30 minutes.

Earlier we named 4 taboos when fertilizing fruit trees that should not be violated.
