Small beets can be the result of several factors affecting the harvest.
An expert from the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh suggested talking about them.
If the soil does not contain the elements necessary for the growth of root crops, then you should not expect abundant fruiting.
During the season, the summer resident will have to make at least 3 additional feedings. The first one is in the spring, when 2-3 true leaves have appeared on the beets. The second one is 2-3 weeks later, and the third one is at the beginning of August.
At the beginning of the growing season, beets need to be provided with nitrogen, and in the second half – with phosphorus and potassium.
It is worth visiting the beds with beet sprouts with a watering can approximately once every 7-10 days. Then the frequency of watering can be reduced, and when the root crops begin to actively fill out, it can be increased again.
There is no need to water the beets 2-3 weeks before the expected harvest.
Beets like moderately light soil: sand is not suitable because the moisture will leave too quickly, and on clay soil the seeds germinate poorly and unevenly. In addition, heavy soil prevents the root crop from growing, and as a result the fruits are not only small, but also gnarled.
