Winter is not a reason to forget about flowers. Some crops need to be sown for seedlings in December-January so that they have time to bloom in the summer. Find out which flowers can be sown in winter and how to care for them.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, reminded us which plants need to be sown for seedlings in December-January.

Verbena hybrid

Verbena hybrida is a low-growing annual with numerous flowers of different shades.

It blooms from July to October and decorates flower beds, mixborders and balconies. Verbena loves the sun, is resistant to drought and diseases, but requires a long growing season - about three months.

Therefore, it should be sown for seedlings at the end of January. Verbena seeds germinate poorly, so they are pre-stratified in the refrigerator or treated with a growth stimulator.

The seeds are distributed over the surface of moistened soil and are not covered with earth.

The container for germination of seeds is covered with film and placed in a warm place. The first sprouts appear in 1-3 weeks.

As soon as mid-May arrives, the seedlings are transplanted to an open area.

Primrose

Primrose is a perennial with large, brightly colored flowers that bloom in spring.

Primrose grows well in partial shade, loves moist soil and regular fertilizing.

Primrose reproduces by seeds, which can be sown for seedlings in January. Then it will bloom in early summer.

Fresh primrose seeds do not require stratification, but old ones should be kept in the refrigerator for several weeks.

The seeds are sown in loose soil, lightly compacted and moistened.

The container is covered with glass or film and placed in a dark place at a temperature of 18-20 °C.

The first sprouts appear after a period of two to four weeks. Then the resulting seedlings are moved to open ground conditions from April to May.

Previously, we talked about which plants should not be planted next to strawberries.
