Rot on potatoes is not an accident. But it is usually accepted to simply cut off the spoiled parts and use the normal pulp for cooking. But is such savings worth the candle?

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, explained why the potato harvest rots in winter.

The main causes of tuber rot can be considered:

1. Disadvantages in soil cultivation before planting potatoes.

2. Abundance of moisture during growth.

3. Overfeeding with organic matter.

4. Careless digging and damage to tubers during harvesting.

The main pathogens are unhealthy specimens, contaminated soil, and tops.

Pathogenic microorganisms colonize on them, subsequently infecting the entire healthy mass of tubers during storage in the basement.

Is it worth eating potatoes affected by rot?

This is not recommended, even when the rotten area is very small and can be cut out. All the same, if the mushrooms get into the human esophagus, they can cause poisoning.

It is especially dangerous to cook green potatoes. They are saturated with the poison solanine, which is unsafe for the body. Such potatoes are used only for planting.
