How to preserve seedlings until spring: every self-respecting summer resident uses this method

As you know, buying seedlings in the fall will cost you much less than the same purchase made in the spring.

But it is not worth taking risks and planting seedlings of fruit trees and shrubs too late, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer.

Instead, the expert advises holding back and leaving the seedlings to overwinter, creating favorable conditions for them.

We will tell you how to preserve seedlings until spring so that they definitely do not freeze, but take root well with the onset of spring. A method such as digging will help you with this.

The trench should be dug on a hill - if not on a natural one, then on an artificial one: you can form a mound with your own hands.

At the same time, make sure that there are no haystacks, woodsheds or barns where livestock are kept nearby.

In addition, the pit should be located away from the compost pit or the place where you store manure.

Now that a suitable site has been selected, all that remains is to dig a hole (if there are few seedlings). The length of the hole made in the ground depends on the number of seedlings, the width should be 50 cm, and the depth – 50-60 cm. A trench option is possible (for a large amount of planting material).

In this case, the wall located to the north should be dug vertically, and the southern one – at an angle of 45 degrees.

Step back at least 25 cm from the edge, after which you can begin laying the seedlings, from which you first had to pluck the leaves, with the roots facing the north side.

All that remains is to fill the seedlings from the roots with loose soil or peat, compacting the soil, and water. With the onset of frost, do not forget to sprinkle the branches sticking out from the outside - as a result, a mound 25-30 cm high will be formed, on top of which you need to put spruce branches, and then snow.
