Roses are one of those plants that need to be covered for the winter.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer, spoke about the rules that should be followed in this process.

1. Before you start covering, roses need to be pruned - not all of them, but only those varieties that need it.

Pruning should be done in the fall, in October. Please note: the cuttings left over from pruning should not be thrown away – save them and root them in the spring.

2. Another procedure preceding sheltering is treatment against diseases, which is carried out by spraying the ground of the bushes and the soil around them with a 3% solution of Bordeaux mixture.

Don't forget to mulch the rose garden using peat or humus - this will protect the plants from frost.

3. Now you can safely begin to cover, using a method that corresponds to the weather conditions in the region where you live.

It depends on the weather whether you need to lay roses in a trench under spruce branches or you can limit yourself to white agrospan.
