Why do geranium leaves turn red?

Most often, geranium leaves turn red when it is under severe stress.

The causes of stress can be different: hypothermia, irregular watering, moving to a new location.

Red leaves may also indicate a lack of nutrients in the soil, in particular magnesium and phosphorus.
