They also hide under fallen leaves and in the forks of branches.

Why clean the trunk and skeletal branches
The answer is obvious – cleaning allows you to get rid of pests and pathogens of scab, fruit rot, and so on.
Cleaning will also help get rid of some of the pests that hide in the bark and tree trunk circle.
Place a sheet of oilcloth under the tree to prevent insect eggs from falling onto the ground – the sheet should fit snugly against the trunk.
It is better to use a wooden scraper, as it will not damage the bark - do not use a hard metal brush. Collect all the garbage that has fallen on the oilcloth and take it away.
