In caring for hosta, oddly enough, there are many controversial points. One of them concerns the autumn pruning of this plant.

Thus, according to the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , some flower growers are in no hurry to trim hosta in the autumn months, because they believe that the procedure can harm the plant or cause it to awaken prematurely with the onset of spring.

Others, on the contrary, are confident that pruning saves the flower from fungal diseases and pests, which often remain for the winter under the shelter of withered foliage.

Moreover, pruning hosta will make your garden look much neater and tidier.

As we can see, there are many more advantages to this event than disadvantages, so we will tell you exactly how to trim the hosta.

The first thing you will need to do is choose the right time for pruning, which mainly depends on the climatic conditions of your region and usually falls at the end of October – beginning of November.

The main signs are yellowed and wilted leaves.

The instrument you plan to use must be clean and, of course, sharp. It is recommended to disinfect it the day before using alcohol (potassium permanganate).

All above-ground parts of the plant at a height of 5-10 cm from the ground are subject to pruning. Please note: too long stumps can rot or break, but the roots do not need to be cut off - the hosta needs them for nutrition.
