It is a known fact that in the fall it is necessary to prepare the soil for planting vegetables in the new season. Supporters of winter planting at the same time prepare the soil for garlic and other cold-resistant crops that are sown in the fall.

But the bed for cucumbers also needs to be prepared in the fall, experts say.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how to do it correctly.

Why prepare beds for cucumbers in the fall

If everything is done correctly, the harvest next season will be unprecedented, experienced gardeners assure.

In carefully prepared soil in the spring, seedlings will take root faster and shoots will emerge just as quickly.

The root system of the seedlings will develop better, and this will ensure better development of the cucumber vines themselves and a higher quality and more abundant harvest.

To do this, you need to decide on a place to plant cucumbers.

Crop rotation

In order not to break your back in vain in the fall, you need to refer to the rules of crop rotation, which state that it is better to grow cucumbers in the new season:

  • where tomatoes, peppers or eggplants grew;
  • after onions or garlic;
  • in place of cabbage or radish.

Preparing the ground

Having decided on the future cucumber bed, you need to add 10 to 12 kilograms of fresh manure per square meter of soil.

Instead of manure, you can add compost, but only if it is not completely rotted.

Then we water the bed with a solution of nitrogen fertilizers, which is prepared from 2-3 tablespoons of ammonium nitrate and 10 liters of water.
