How to speed up the ripening process of tomatoes: summer residents revealed the main tricks and rules

No gardener would want to lose their tomato harvest just because the vegetables do not ripen on time.

However, this is partly our fault.

Sometimes tomatoes remain green only because we make some mistakes, explains Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert at the online publication BelNovosti, a landscape designer and agronomist.

How can the problem be dealt with?

Hot weather or frost

Sometimes there is a lot of heat during the day and the temperature at night becomes quite cold. This is stress for tomatoes, which prevents them from ripening.

Therefore, vegetables need to be "hidden" in cold weather under covering material. And good mulch will be an excellent protection from the harmful effects of heat.

Stop nitrogen fertilizing in time

It is extremely important to understand the needs of tomatoes. Once the vegetables have begun to bloom, they will no longer need nitrogen. If you continue to apply it, the tomatoes simply will not ripen on time.

Excess moisture

Sometimes we only visually assess the soil for dryness or moisture. But under the influence of the sun, the top layer becomes dry very quickly.

It would be more correct to evaluate this moment at a depth of five centimeters. If you add too much moisture, the tomatoes may get sick or ripen poorly.

A month before harvest

If you prepare properly for this important moment, then even if there are mistakes, you can speed up the ripening process of vegetables.

To do this, a month before harvesting, carry out the pinching procedure, remove unnecessary ovaries and do not leave flowers.
