If you plant some plants next to the watermelon, it will grow much better.

There are also crops that negatively affect the growth and development of watermelon; it is better not to plant them next to it.

Watermelon is a popular summer fruit that requires lots of sun and space.

When choosing neighbors for it, you need to take into account that the watermelon has a long stem, so it itself can be planted in one place, and the fruit may end up in a completely different one.

Plants that are susceptible to aphids or garden bugs should not be planted near watermelons, as they will begin to damage the watermelon vine. Zucchini should not be planted nearby either, as their female flowers attract beetles that feed on young watermelon leaves.

It is better to plant basil or marigolds, cosmos, daisies or dill nearby, which attract ladybugs that hunt aphids and other pests.

Mixed flowers from the Asteraceae family are also good companions for watermelon, as they naturally fight against some types of garden insects that can harm watermelons.

Of the cultivated plants, radishes are the best. Their shallow roots help prevent weeds from growing and provide better nutrition for the watermelon at the beginning of the season.

What plants should not be planted next to watermelons

1. Cabbage. This includes broccoli, cauliflower, and white cabbage. It releases chemicals into the soil that suppress the growth of the watermelon stem, which significantly reduces the yield.

2. Legumes. Their root system requires the same nutrients as watermelon. If you want to grow them, you need to sow them far away from watermelon.

3. Corn. It not only deprives the watermelon of essential nutrients, but can also infect it with various diseases.

4. Potatoes. The glycoalkaloids they contain slow down the growth of watermelon stems and cause blossom-end rot of the fruit.

5. Tomatoes. These plants are susceptible to late blight and fusarium wilt, which begin to develop in a humid environment.

6. Pumpkins and squashes. They attract bugs and other harmful beetles to the garden, which can begin to damage the watermelon stems and leaves.
