When to prune tree hydrangea - in spring or autumn: here's what the professionals think about it

As you know, owners of tree hydrangea can prune the plant with the onset of spring or with the arrival of autumn.

Moreover, the first option, according to the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , is preferable, because in the fall the shoots can freeze.

However, spring pruning also has its own nuances, which, if done incorrectly, can lead to the death of the plant.

Trouble can occur with late pruning, which can lead to sap leakage and, accordingly, depletion of the hydrangea.

Therefore, if you decide to take the pruning shears in your hands in the spring, you should do it before the sap starts to flow. If the buds have already swollen and the sap has started to flow, postpone the procedure until the fall.

Also, avoid pruning too high, as the heavy flower heads of tree hydrangea can cause the plant to lie on the ground.

Gardeners recommend using low pruning on 2-3 pairs of buds. The cut should be made 1 cm above the bud, at an angle.

Use pruning shears without regret – after strong pruning, new shoots will emerge from the roots, and as a result, the hydrangea will become even more lush.
