If slugs appear in the compost pit, it’s a disaster.

You can try to start collecting the gastropods by hand before adding fertilizer to the beds. But this method cannot always be called effective.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what can be done in this case.

1. Manual removal

Slugs can be removed manually with a shovel or scoop. But it is more convenient to do this before you are going to apply fertilizer to the beds, otherwise you will have to sift everything to the very bottom.

2. Using traps

A simpler way. Using slug traps with simple bait (beer, kvass), you can catch the pests in a short time.

3. Poison treatment

If slugs are not removed manually or with traps, chemicals such as metaldehyde, boric acid, or other insecticides can be used. However, before using chemicals, it is important to read the instructions carefully and follow all manufacturer's recommendations.

4. Change of conditions

To prevent slugs from appearing in your compost bin, you can change the conditions of your compost bin. For example, you can add lime or ash to the bin to create an environment that is unsuitable for slugs to live in. You can also use special compost bin covers that prevent slugs from getting inside.
