3 Pointless Uses for Mulch That Definitely Don't Work

11.05.2023 11:55

Plant growers probably learned about soil mulching from nature itself, which is not surprising: just look under a layer of leaves and needles in the forest and you can easily find loose, moist soil without weeds.

This is exactly the effect that summer residents want to achieve on their own plots, but not everyone succeeds in achieving this goal.

Here are 3 mistakes that you are making and are simply wasting your time.

1. Mulching too early

Mulching of seedlings should be done not immediately after planting, but after 1.5-2 weeks, otherwise the rate of plant growth will be disrupted.

If we talk about other cultivated plants and flowers, then it is worth covering the ground around them with mulch when their height reaches 10-15 cm.

2. Lack of loosening

Here is the correct order of actions: first, the beds should be watered and left for a while, after which you should carefully loosen the soil and only then mulch it.

3. Using unsuitable material

Not every material can be used as mulch. For example, sawdust is suitable for acidic soil, and straw is suitable for neutral soil. Use crushed stone and finely chopped bark to cover paths.
