Thrifty owners always strive to have everything they need at home, including onions.
But the problem is that midges often appear, which are not so easy to get rid of.
The shelf life of onions depends on environmental conditions. Experienced housewives never store onions in plastic bags. The reason is simple: vegetables do not "breathe", so they spoil quickly.
The best option is a container that is well ventilated. For example, housewives use baskets, wooden boxes or cardboard boxes with air holes on the sides.
Another clever method that has been used for several decades is nylon tights. According to housewives, the vegetable is stored in them for a very long time.
Experienced housewives believe that it is easier to prevent a problem than to try to solve it later. To prevent midges from circling over onions, you need to comply with a number of conditions.
1. Before sending for long-term storage, the bulbs are dried. This is relevant for fruits grown on your own plot.
2. The humidity level in the room should not exceed 80%.
3. When stored indoors, the optimal temperature for onions is +22 °C. But in the basement, the ideal temperature is between +1 … +5 °C.
4. If there are a lot of onions, then the fruits need to be periodically moved around and the excess skins, which peel off on their own, removed.
Experienced housewives use one trick that protects onions from midges. According to them, carrots should be stored next to the onions. It is believed that the root vegetable repels insects.
