May is the time when summer residents begin to transport to their summer cottages everything that has grown on their windowsills since February.

But besides replanting plants, there are other equally important things that should not be forgotten. This includes processing plantings, weed control, and much more.

Here is a list of the 11 most important things that summer residents should do in May.

1. Greenhouse

First of all, summer residents plant seedlings of eggplants, tomatoes and peppers in a greenhouse. In open ground, it is advisable to cover the plantings at night in May, so you should stock up on covering material.

In addition, a week before transplanting, you must not forget to reduce watering of the seedlings and harden them off.

2. Open ground

In May, you can plant cabbage (early), root crops (beets and carrots), as well as onions and garlic, radishes, and legumes. Heat-loving crops are planted in the second half of May.

3. Weeding

It is important to continue the fight against weeds and not to forget about hilling, which saves plants from the cold in unstable spring weather.

4. Berry bushes

If necessary, you can propagate berry crops (raspberries, currants, gooseberries). This is more conveniently done using so-called layering, when a tall shoot is dug into the soil so that it takes root over the summer.

5. Loosening

Once a month, the soil needs to be loosened, which is best combined with weeding. The procedure improves oxygen access to the roots.

6. Spraying

The blooming garden must continue to be protected from diseases (scab, rust, rot, powdery mildew, etc.). Therefore, on a dry day, spraying must be carried out.

7. Whitewashing

Those who did not manage to do it at the beginning of spring should not consider it too late. Whitewashing primarily protects tree trunks from sunburn and pests.

8. Top dressing

Many plants enter the phase of active growth and flowering at this time, and therefore they cannot be left without additional feeding. It will be easier to purchase universal additives for these purposes, so as not to select dosages and compositions for each crop separately.

9. Grapes

In May, you can plant grapes from fruit crops. It is better to plant nuts, apple trees, pears and other fruit trees in the fall.

10. Flowers

Don't forget about aesthetics. In May, you need to tidy up the flowerbeds and decorate them with flowers such as bells, phloxes and dahlias. Closer to summer, calla lilies, geraniums, fuchsias and other heat-loving plants are planted.

11. Roses

After the soil temperature warms up to 15 degrees Celsius, you can plant roses. Usually at this time of year the air temperature reaches 16-18 degrees. Florists advise buying seedlings immediately before planting.
