You shouldn't even dream of getting a quality grape harvest without pruning.

However, even this useful procedure can reduce crop yields if serious mistakes are made.

Which ones exactly – you will find out from this article.

Perhaps, the first place should be given to the incorrectly chosen time for pruning. Experienced winegrowers advise to take up the pruning shears in late autumn, so as not to damage new shoots.

Partial removal of shoots will also not be beneficial, which often happens when the gardener is afraid to trim the tops of the grapes or remove large branches, trimming mainly only the upper shoots.

This type of pruning causes the plant to become overgrown and therefore receive less light. As a result, the growth of branches slows down.

This problem can be avoided by annually removing 70 to 80% of the growth from the fruiting bush.

Fruit-bearing and thin shoots are removed, thanks to which the grapes will be able to receive more nutrients and spend them on the formation of ovaries.

Thus, all that needs to be left is the trunk itself and thick perennial shoots.
