Caring for strawberries in spring begins immediately after the snow melts.

Before applying fertilizers and treating for pests, there are several important things to do in your strawberry garden.

Trimming

First of all, remove the dry leaves. Over the winter, they often become compacted, forming a dense layer.

The procedure will increase the effectiveness of pest and disease control and will also facilitate the process of applying fertilizers.

In addition, remove the runners if you did not do this at the end of summer or beginning of autumn. Removing the shoots is part of the process of reducing the density of the strawberry plant. Thanks to this, the bushes will be less likely to get sick.

Cleaning and loosening

Many gardeners cover strawberries for the winter with sawdust or other mulch. Therefore, the space between the rows is cleared of the old layer, which could have partially decomposed over the winter.

When the space between the rows is clear of mulch and other debris, loosening is carried out in order to improve the saturation of the roots with oxygen.
