In the gardening community, you can hear the opinion that cherry trees do not like pruning and therefore you should not attach special importance to this procedure.

This is a misconception. As with any tree, this procedure is important, and it is the correct pruning that determines how large and tasty the berries will grow and how many of them will grow in general.

Therefore, it is possible and necessary to prune cherry trees in spring.

When to trim

The procedure is carried out with the onset of warm weather, not earlier than the second half of March, before the sap begins to flow and before the buds swell. Pruning is carried out in dry weather, otherwise the wounds will take longer to heal.

Formative pruning is planned for spring. It also increases the yield. All tangled branches and those growing inwards are removed.

At the same time, you can remove old branches that have been damaged over the winter.

If this is not done, then the dense crown will create favorable conditions for the spread of diseases, which will affect the tree itself and its harvest.

Basic rules of pruning

1. Remove branches that grow close to each other and thicken the crown.

2. Trim intertwining branches.

3. Remove old, diseased and damaged shoots.

4. Thin out the crown and, if necessary, shorten young shoots that are no older than three to four years.
