Eggshells have been used in gardening for quite some time now.
However, even here there are nuances. This waste can be useful in the garden. But in some situations there is also harm.
Eggshells are collected in the fall and the process continues until spring. The waste is crushed, for example, with a rolling pin and stored in a separate bag.
In spring, the shell is used as a loosening agent and soil deoxidizer. But it is not the best fertilizer, because it does not dissolve in water. It decomposes in the soil for quite a long time, which is not at all suitable for annual plants.
The shell also repels slugs. Summer residents sprinkle it on the ground around cabbage. The pests cannot overcome this obstacle, so they avoid the plantings.
The shells of painted eggs are no good. The dyes do not bring any benefit to the soil and plants.
Before storing the shell, it must be thoroughly washed with water. The waste can lie in the bag for several months. During this time, pathogenic bacteria will appear, which will then end up in the garden bed.
But there is an alternative opinion on this matter. Some gardeners believe that washing the shell is a waste of time. They explain this by the fact that on the surface of a raw egg there is a bactericidal membrane, the components of which do not let microbes in. The shell of boiled eggs after heat treatment is also safe for the soil and plants.
