The intricacies of strawberry propagation: is it worth dividing old bushes

Over time, strawberry bushes grow, become larger, and gardeners think that they can be used to increase the size of the garden bed.

It is possible to divide old bushes, but experts do not advise doing so. There is a very good reason for this.

Pests

During the development process, the bushes accumulate various pests. For example, a lot of ticks.

What happens when you divide such a bush? Some of the mites remain, and the other half moves with the seedling to a new location.

But gardeners believe that dividing old bushes is justified when the variety is very good and there is no way to purchase the required amount of planting material.

This method is a good option to get runners from divided rosettes in the future. They can be used later. However, this is not the best way to propagate strawberries.

Another disadvantage of seedlings from old bushes is that they produce weak roots, grow poorly, get sick, and it is difficult to expect a good harvest.
