Gnarled and unsightly potatoes disappoint summer residents who have put a lot of effort into growing a decent harvest.

Gardeners are interested in why tubers become deformed. There are several reasons, the main one being unstable weather conditions.

Weather

Crooked and cracked potatoes are dug out of the ground when there has been a long period of heat and no rain for weeks. But then suddenly there is a near-record amount of rainfall.

There is a sharp change in both temperature and lighting. In such conditions, gnarled tubers can grow.

Diseases

The weather is not always to blame for the fact that deformed tubers have to be dug out of the ground. Often, summer residents miss the fact that pathogenic microflora has formed in the soil.

For example, potatoes grow crooked and cracked if they are affected by scab, black leg, button rot. Because of these diseases, the pulp becomes rotten, the fruits crack.
