How to calculate the timing of sowing seeds for seedlings: simple about the complex

With the summer cottage season approaching, many farmers are racking their brains over the question: when should they start sowing so as not to be late for planting seedlings in the ground?

An expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how professional farmers calculate sowing dates.

To do this, you only need to know 2 things: when warm weather sets in in your region and how long the seedling period of a particular crop lasts.

Let's take sweet pepper as an example.

As is known, before planting in the ground, seedlings of this vegetable should be grown for 70 days. We add to this figure 10-14 days to wait for shoots and get 84 days.

Now we need a calendar. Count back 84 days from the expected date of planting the seedlings in the ground - this is the date when you should lower the seeds of sweet pepper into the ground to get seedlings.

If you have difficulty determining the seedling age, use this cheat sheet for the most common crops.

  • So, for eggplants it will take up to 50 days, plus another 12 days for germination.
  • Tomatoes grow in 45-50 days. In addition, they need 7-8 days to sprout.
  • It takes 30 days to grow cucumber seedlings, of which 25-26 days are seedling age and 3-4 days for germination.
  • Cabbage seedlings can be planted 40 days after sowing.
